Commissioning Large Bronze Sculpture

Bronze is the oldest material in this catalogue and still the right answer whenever a sculpture has to read as permanent: memorials, civic figures, religious statues, animal groups and estate pieces. Cast properly it lasts centuries with almost no intervention, it takes fine surface detail that no fabricated metal can match, and it can be repaired invisibly decades later. It is also the slowest and most labour-intensive process we run, which is why lead times and pricing work differently from stainless or Corten work.

How a Large Bronze Is Actually Made

Clay and the master model

Every commission begins as a sculpted model. For a custom piece our sculptors build it in clay at full size or at a scaled maquette; you approve photographs from every angle before a mould is taken. This is the stage where a face, a pose or a proportion is corrected. After the mould, changes get expensive.

Lost-wax casting

A silicone mould is taken from the clay, a wax positive is pulled and hand-chased, then invested in a ceramic shell, burned out and filled with molten bronze at around 1,150 degrees C. Large works are cast in sections — a 4 m figure might be 12 to 20 separate pours.

Welding, chasing and finishing

Sections are welded, the seams chased back by hand until they vanish, and the whole surface worked to match the original clay texture. This is where the difference between a good and a mediocre foundry becomes obvious, and it is the majority of the hand-labour in the price.

Patination

Chemical patinas are applied to heated bronze and sealed with wax or lacquer. Classic options are dark brown, French brown, verdigris green, black, and light or golden brown. We send patina samples on bronze coupons before committing.

Alloy, Wall Thickness and Structure

We cast in silicon bronze for most outdoor work — it welds cleanly, patinas evenly and resists corrosion better than traditional tin bronzes. Wall thickness is typically 5-8 mm on large pieces; heavier than that adds weight and cost without adding life. Inside, a stainless steel armature carries the structural load and transfers it to the base plate, which matters because bronze itself is not the load path in a tall figure with narrow ankles or a rearing horse on two hooves.

What Drives the Price

Three things, in order: the amount of hand-sculpting the model needs, the total bronze weight, and the complexity of the finishing. A simplified abstract form at 3 m can cost less than a detailed portrait figure at 2 m. Editions and repeats of a piece we have already modelled are considerably cheaper than a first casting, because the mould already exists. If budget is fixed, tell us the number early and we will show you where scale, alloy weight or detail can move to meet it rather than quietly thinning the work.

Installing a Large Bronze

Bronze is heavy — a 3 m figure is commonly 400-900 kg — so the foundation and the lift matter. We supply base-plate and anchor-bolt drawings, foundation loads for your engineer, and lifting-point locations. Most pieces bolt to a cast-in anchor plate in a reinforced concrete pad, usually under a stone or granite plinth. We ship with the anchor template so the plinth is drilled correctly before delivery day, and we can supervise the lift remotely or in person.

Living With It

Outdoor bronze wants a coat of microcrystalline wax once or twice a year, applied to a clean, dry, slightly warm surface. That is the whole maintenance programme. Left unwaxed, the patina will drift towards a natural green-brown over five to fifteen years depending on rainfall and pollution — which many clients prefer, and which does no harm. Avoid pressure washing and avoid acidic cleaners; both strip patina unevenly.

How long does a custom bronze take?

Typically four to seven months for a life-size or larger figure: roughly 30-50 days for clay modelling and approval, then 60-120 days for casting and finishing. Monumental groups run longer.

Can you work from photographs for a portrait statue?

Yes. Good likenesses need several photographs from different angles plus height and build information; video is very helpful. You approve the clay before we cast.

Can you reproduce or restore an existing bronze?

We can produce new work in the style of historic pieces and recast from an existing sculpture where you hold the rights to do so. We do not copy works still in copyright without the rights holder’s authorisation.

Is bronze or stainless steel better outdoors?

Bronze for figurative, traditional and commemorative work and for anywhere you want warmth and patina. Stainless for large contemporary volumes, reflective forms and tight weight limits. Both last decades; they simply say different things.
