Corten — weathering steel — is designed to rust on purpose. Its alloy forms a dense oxide layer that seals the surface and halts deeper corrosion, giving a warm, living rust finish that needs no paint and almost no maintenance. It is the default choice where sculpture has to sit naturally in planting, stone and water.

How the patina develops. A new Corten piece arrives mill-grey and darkens through orange to a deep russet brown over roughly six to eighteen months, depending on climate. Wet-dry cycling drives the process, so coastal and rainy sites mature faster than arid ones. We can also pre-weather work in the yard so it arrives closer to its final tone.

One honest trade-off. During the first years, rust runoff can stain light paving and stonework beneath the piece. It is easily designed out with a drainage gap, a gravel bed or a recessed plinth, and we detail this on the foundation drawing rather than leaving you to discover it after installation.

Fabrication. Plate is laser or plasma cut, rolled or press-formed, then welded with matching weathering-grade consumables so the seams patinate at the same rate as the parent metal. Internal frames are either Corten or hot-dip galvanised steel, isolated where the two metals meet.

Where it works best. Landscape and park sculpture, screens and privacy panels, planters and water features, entrance monoliths and signage, and pieces intended to read as part of the ground rather than above it.

Does it keep rusting until it fails? No. The oxide layer is self-limiting and seals the metal beneath. The exception is permanent water contact or standing damp, where the patina never stabilises — so we use Corten above the waterline only, never submerged.

Will it mark clothing or hands? Lightly, during the first months while loose oxide is still shedding. Once the patina stabilises it stops. For seating or high-touch positions we can supply it pre-weathered and sealed.

Process and delivery. Send your concept and site dimensions for free 3D renders and technical drawings. Typical lead time is two to three months. Work is crated in reinforced wooden cases and shipped worldwide, with foundation drawings issued in advance.
