A sculptural fountain is two projects in one: the artwork, and the water system that has to run reliably behind it. Most fountain problems we are asked to fix on other people’s work are hydraulic, not sculptural.

The water system
We design the pump, reservoir, pipework and overflow with the sculpture rather than after it. Key decisions are the flow rate — too little and a sheet of water breaks into drips, too much and it splashes beyond the basin — and whether the reservoir is integral or a separate buried tank. We supply pump specifications, electrical requirements and plumbing drawings with the piece.

Materials in constant water
Water changes the material rules. We specify 316 stainless rather than 304 anywhere in permanent contact, because chlorinated or treated water will pit 304. Corten is used above the waterline only — in constant wet it never stabilises its patina and keeps shedding rust.

Maintenance you should expect
Water features need real upkeep: topping up for evaporation, cleaning the filter, seasonal draining where it freezes, and treatment against algae and scale. Hard water leaves white deposits on dark and mirrored surfaces. We would rather set that expectation now than after installation.
