A city entrance sculpture is a gateway marker — it tells drivers and visitors they have arrived somewhere. It is usually the largest piece in a municipality’s public art programme, seen mostly at speed, from a distance, and against open sky.

Designed to read at speed
Work seen from a moving vehicle needs a strong, simple silhouette. Fine detail is wasted; what registers is outline, height and contrast against the sky. We test the form at the actual approach distance and speed in 3D, and can render it into photographs taken from the approaching carriageway.

Height and wind
Gateway markers are tall and usually stand in exposed, open ground, which makes wind the governing load by a wide margin. Structural calculations, internal armature sizing and foundation design are done by our engineers and issued as stamped drawings for the highways authority or council.

Lighting
Most gateway pieces are seen in the dark half the year. We design integrated or ground-recessed lighting with the sculpture, supplying electrical requirements and duct routes so the groundworks contractor can lay them with the foundation.

Materials
316 stainless where de-icing salt is used, Corten for a landscape-toned marker, painted steel for civic colour or a coat of arms.
