Custom Sculpture for Architecture, Public Art & Landscape

A town or city square is the hardest setting in public art: the piece is seen from every side, from distance and close up, against buildings rather than sky, and it has to hold a space that may be fifty metres across without dominating the people crossing it.

Scale and sightlines. Square sculpture usually needs more height than clients first expect — a piece that reads well at three metres in a garden disappears in a plaza. We work from your site plan and building heights to test proportions in 3D before any metal is cut, and can render the piece into your own site photographs so a committee sees it in place.

Paving, drainage and foundations. Squares sit on structural slabs, services and sometimes basements, so anchoring has to be agreed early. We issue foundation drawings with bolt patterns, loadings and depth requirements, and design the base detail so surface water drains away rather than pooling at the plinth.

Finishes that survive footfall. Mirror-polished stainless makes a spectacular landmark but shows fingerprints at hand height, so we often specify brushed or textured surfaces on the lower two metres and mirror above. Corten and painted steel both work well against stone paving.

What if there is a basement or services below? Tell us at concept stage. We can design a wider, shallower pad or a surface-mounted base plate that spreads load instead of a deep block, and we size it to the loadings your structural engineer confirms.

How long does approval usually take? Longer than fabrication, in our experience. We supply renders, drawings and calculations early precisely so the approval process can run in parallel with the build rather than after it.
